I’m Keiichi Nakanishi, a traveler based in Japan. I enjoy famous sights too, but I’m more interested in places with a story — remote towns, small islands, local communities, unusual places to stay, regional food, and journeys where I don’t quite know what will happen next.

In the summer of 2004, I left Japan in my own car, a used Toyota Caldina that had cost me just JPY90000 (700USD).

I shipped the car from Japan to Vladivostok and drove west across Russia on the newly connected Trans-Siberian Highway, continuing across Europe. 54 days,16 countries, same one car.

Verkhoyansk in Winter – A Journey to the Coldest Towns on Earth

Verkhoyansk lies in the Sakha Republic in northeastern Russia, a region famous for some of the lowest temperatures ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere. I wanted to know what life was actually like there in winter.

There was little tourist information and no simple way to get there. So I went to find out.
