Every journey brings encounters that can only happen in that particular place.I enjoy famous sights too, but I’m often more interested in what lies beyond them — the everyday lives of local people, cultures rooted in the land, old towns and distinctive places to stay, regional food, small islands and remote communities. Even places that receive little attention in guidebooks can reveal something fascinating when you actually go there.

I’m Keiichi Nakanishi, a traveler based in Tokyo. This website is a collection of journeys I have made in Japan and around the world — from islands, villages, railways and unusual places to stay across Japan, to local cultures and food abroad, as well as longer adventures such as my drive across Siberia and Eurasia.

Travel is not only about searching for spectacular scenery. For me, it is also about going somewhere unfamiliar, meeting people, sharing food, walking through their towns and villages, and getting a glimpse of how people live.
